We’ve all felt the aftermath of Thanksgiving dinner—that stuffed, tired feeling that makes you want to waddle straight to your bed for a nap. It feels even worse when you’ve worked for months to trim down your waistline by exercising and using weight loss products, especially when you step on the scale after the holiday weekend.

Just because the rest of the country gains an average of five to 10 pounds during the holidays, it doesn’t mean you have to. Why not make a goal for yourself to maintain your weight this Thanksgiving? Try these following tips and tricks from our weight loss clinics to keep you on track with your diet and still enjoy the holiday.

1. Work out all weekend. Keep your metabolism revved throughout the weekend and help burn the extra calories you consume by working out as many days as possible. If you can’t make it to the gym or your regular exercise class, go for a walk or jog in your neighborhood or play a game of football with the family. It will boost your energy and make you more mindful about overindulging at the big meal. A short walk after dinner will aid digestion and burn some extra calories as well.

2. Focus on protein and veggies. Our weight loss clinics promote a high-protein diet in general, and Thanksgiving is an ideal day to put it into practice. Load your plate with turkey and veggies to fill you up, leaving just a little bit of room for small scoops of the more fattening sides that you can’t resist.

3. Try the fork trick. Slow your role with the fork trick—as soon as you take a bite, put your fork down, let it go completely and chew slowly. Wait until you are done with each bite to pick the fork back up. This will slow you down and give you more time to enjoy your company.

4. Bring a healthy dish. Whether you are hosting or just bringing something, make at least one healthy recipe that includes less fat and sugar and focuses more on nutrients. Often times, no one will notice the lack of fattening ingredients and you’ll be certain to have a healthy choice to put on your plate.

5. Be Realistic. When you’re dieting and using weight loss products, it’s important to have realistic expectations. Our schedules get busier this time of year, so you may not be able to work out as much as usual. Aim to maintain your results, instead of trying to achieve the same pace you’ve been experiencing up until the holidays. Forgive yourself if you do stray for a day or two, but get back on track as soon as possible.
